I love playing fantasy football, but I prefer to play dynasty fantasy football. For those of you unfamiliar with Dynasty leagues, the concept is very similar to a goalie league, but instead of just keeping one, three, or five players, you can keep all of your players. The reason I play in a Dynasty league is because of the added strategy that comes with these types of leagues. Many Dynasty League players will lead the challenge as most Dynasty Leagues have very reputable owners. Dynasty leagues are basically a year-round league and are as close to an NFL franchise as most of us will ever want.
After your league holds its annual draft, you'll need to decide if the players you just drafted are more valuable than those already on your roster, as you'll need to drop players from your roster before the first game to reach the season's squad limit (or when your league has set the deadline). When making your player evaluations for draft or roster cuts or free agent picks, be aware of whether the decision you're making is a short-term fix or a long-term investment, and then weigh the consequences. You don't want to fill your roster with aging veterans and cripple your team for years to come (which you can do in a goaltender league for instant success and still come back next year with a good draft pick). You also don't want to peak a lot first and second year, as that would prevent you from competing in the upcoming season. You need a good mix of players that offer the best chance of success, both in the short and long term. You should also be aggressive in trading aging players before there is a dramatic drop in value. And you'll have a continuum of developing players on your bench who can act as replacements today and potential future players. Managing a Dynasty League team is not easy as there are factors and strategies that do not need to be taken into account when making decisions in a goalkeeping or reshuffle league.

The first thing to decide when rebuilding a dynasty team is whether to try to win now or later. If your team is loaded with promising freshmen and sophomores, try trading some of those players to other owners for established stars. This is an obvious way to turn your team into a competitor right away. But giving away your youth can leave you with pain for years to come. More importantly, a poor side is unlikely to have enough assets to trade a solid starting line-up. Winning now is ideal, but not always possible, and owners with truly terrible teams are often better off planning for the future. Losses can be frustrating, but rebuilding a franchise usually requires patience. And like the NFL, it's hard to win year after year, so you have to rebuild your franchise.
WATCH COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND KNOW THE TOP ROOKIES

If not, stick with a RB who will take your team to more championships in the years to come. Numerous drafts can also help you rebuild. So be active in trading. Offer an older veteran as another first round pick to one of the better teams that just needs a third RB or third WR. Remember that rebuilding takes time and can take a few years depending on how bad your team is.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
A dynasty team is unlike teams in other leagues because it takes patience to build a winner. Don't be discouraged if it takes your team a while to get going because eventually they will come together as long as you keep adding great leads, getting great deals and doing your homework. Some fantasy players will almost certainly feel the urge to trade their juniors for current stars when they find their teams stumbling out of the gates, but it's important to resist that temptation unless you're sure you want to. You get enough players to compete right away. Just because a cover player or two isn't performing or is injured doesn't mean it's time for big changes. You have to remember that these are the players you have to play with next year. An injured or underperforming player in one season still has fantasy value for subsequent seasons. It takes a few years for your draft choices to mature. It takes a few years to build a franchise to compete this year and next year. Be patient as it takes time to build a Dynasty League team because as the old saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day".

The leagues are for serious owners, the competition is tougher, the strategy is more complicated, and one mistake can cost you years. You can be at the top one year and at the bottom the next. And that's why I like dynasty leagues more than other types of leagues. It will take time to get some good players and it will take time for your draft picks to mature. It may even take a few years to build your franchise to be competitive year after year. But don't lose patience.
